Styrofoam or polyethylene foam used to cushion products. Non-recyclable, non-biodegradable, creates significant landfill volume.

Molded pulp or die-cut corrugated inserts

Molded pulp (pressed recycled paper) or die-cut corrugated card inserts provide excellent cushioning, are fully recyclable, and can be printed or embossed for a premium unboxing effect.

Cost delta: −$0.10 to +$0.30/unit. Fully recyclable. Premium aesthetic.

Metallic foil laminate wrapping paper

Paper bonded with a metallic film for a reflective surface. Creates recycling contamination issues due to the bonded plastic/metal layer.

Environmental cost: composite material — difficult to separate

Metallised hot-foil stamp on recyclable base paper

Apply metallic effect only where needed (logo, accents) via hot foil stamping on an otherwise recyclable paper. Uses a fraction of the metallic material and the base paper remains recyclable.

Cost delta: +$0.30–$0.60/unit (tooling required). Net material use: significantly lower.

Plastic window films (folding cartons)

Clear plastic windows cut into folding cartons to show the product. The plastic-paper composite is not accepted in paper recycling streams.

Environmental cost: composites non-recyclable at most facilities

Cellulose-based compostable window film

Plant-derived cellulose film provides the same clear window effect and is certified compostable (EN13432). More expensive but enables full-box compostability claim.

Tissue paper (standard bleached)

Chlorine-bleached white tissue. Functional but not differentiated, and the bleaching process has environmental costs.
