GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the universal measurement of paper and board weight — and it is the single number that most directly determines whether your packaging feels cheap or premium in a customer's hands. Yet most brands never see it on a supplier's quote. They should.

Imagine cutting a sheet of paper exactly one meter wide and one meter tall. Now weigh it on a scale. That weight in grams is the paper's GSM. A standard office printer uses 80gsm paper. A high-end business card runs at 400gsm. A luxury rigid box lid might be wrapped in 128gsm art paper over 2mm greyboard.
Higher GSM means more material per square meter, which means thicker, stiffer, heavier, and — in most cases — more premium. But the relationship isn't linear: a 350gsm folding carton feels more rigid than 300gsm because of how the board is manufactured, not just the weight. Structure matters alongside weight.

How GSM Affects the Customer's Perception of Your Brand
There's a well-documented phenomenon in consumer psychology: heavier objects are perceived as more valuable. This applies directly to packaging. Customers who pick up a 2.5mm greyboard rigid box instinctively assign higher value to the product inside — before they've even opened it.
350gsm+ carton or 2.5mm rigid
The customer picks it up and notices the weight. Corners hold sharp angles. The box doesn't flex when squeezed. Creates immediate quality perception. Appropriate for $50+ products.
300gsm carton or 1.8mm rigid
Feels like a well-made product box. Holds its structure, prints cleanly, and performs well at retail. The comfortable mid-range for $20–$50 products across most categories.
250gsm carton
Lightweight — acceptable for FMCG and high-volume retail where cost pressure is real. Not appropriate for anything positioned as a premium or gift item. Flexes under slight pressure.
3mm+ rigid, 157gsm wrap
The territory of $100+ products, collector editions, and flagship gift sets. The box has a physical solidity that communicates craft and permanence. Customers keep these boxes for years.
The GSM Trap: When Higher Isn't Better
More GSM is not always the right call. There are two situations where higher paper weight actively works against you.
Die-cutting precision. Folding cartons with very complex die-cut shapes — windows, intricate tabs, tight perforations — can be harder to cut cleanly at very high GSM. A 450gsm board may not fold as crisply as 350gsm when the design includes tight radii or multiple simultaneous scores.
Weight-based shipping. For e-commerce brands, every gram matters. A 100-unit shipment difference in box weight can push you into a higher carrier weight bracket. If you're shipping 50,000 boxes per month, a 50-gram reduction per unit is 2,500kg lighter — real money in freight savings.
Always ask: "What GSM is the wrap paper, and what thickness is the greyboard?" A supplier quoting you a "luxury rigid box" at $2.00 per unit may be using 1.5mm greyboard. A supplier quoting $3.50 per unit may be using 2.5mm. You are paying for different products. Always compare like for like.
GSM in Finishes: How Paper Weight Interacts With Surface Effects
GSM determines how well your surface finishes perform. Foil stamping on very thin paper can cause the metallic film to crack or peel at edges. Embossing requires enough board thickness to hold the raised relief without the paper splitting.
For foil stamping, 128gsm art paper is the reliable minimum. For deep embossing or debossing, 157gsm is recommended. Soft-touch lamination performs best over 300gsm+ boards because the velvety texture requires a firm substrate to feel truly tactile.
