Holographic Boxes.

The holographic surface scatters the scanner's light, so a code printed straight onto it often won't read. The problem tends to show up at the till instead of on the proof, which makes it an expensive thing to find out late.

We place barcodes and QR codes on a solid, non-holographic area with a printed white or colour block underneath. Every code is scan-tested on the sample before production starts.

Accents usually work better, because a surface that is holographic everywhere turns into visual noise. The effect needs plain areas around it to register as movement.

There are three ways to build it. Holographic board or film covers the whole sheet and is printed over. Holographic foil stamping puts the effect only where you place it, and a holographic laminate goes over conventional print. We'd start most brands on foil and keep full board for packs where coverage is the point.

We print a solid ink layer behind every line of type so the text sits on flat colour instead of the rainbow. Without it, the diffraction breaks up letterforms and small print becomes hard to read from any angle.

Small copy and required marks get the same treatment as the barcode, sitting on a solid underlay so they read as clearly as they would on a plain carton. The panel has room for everything the pack needs to carry.

Matte or soft-touch laminate around a holographic foil stamp gives the effect a quiet ground to shift against. Embossing under the foil adds relief, and spot UV can pick out other details without competing with it.

Pattern holographics are available as well, carrying a set diffraction design across the foil or film. Because that kind of surface is hard to reproduce, some brands use it as an authentication mark on the pack.

Holographic boxes are made to your dimensions, with no fixed size list. Send us the product's measurements or a sample, and we size the inside of the box around it with room for an insert.

The finish can go on a folding carton or a rigid box with a magnetic closure, and the inside can be printed as well. Bigger panels need more thought about where the effect goes, so we mark up the dieline with you before anything is printed.

The order minimum is 500 boxes. That applies across all three routes, from full holographic board to a single foil stamp, and runs can grow to 100,000.

If you're trying the effect on one product before rolling it across a range, 500 is a sensible first quantity. Any foil die made for the first run can be reused on the reorder.

Expect 7 to 10 business days for production, with a rush option of 5 to 7 business days. We ship finished orders to any state.

Before that, we'd send a physical sample, which we turn round in 5 to 7 business days. A holographic finish has to be seen moving in your hand, and the sample is also where the barcodes get scan-tested. Its fee is credited once the bulk order goes ahead.

No, the effect depends on movement, so it looks livelier in a shopper's hand than in a still photo. On a shelf the colour shifts as people walk past and change angle, and that shift is what catches the eye.

A flat product photo freezes one angle, and the box can come across as plain silver. For online listings, a short video or a few angled shots show the finish far better than a single front-on image.
