Brown board shifts every colour warmer and darker, because there is no white surface underneath to reflect light back through the ink. One or two colours with bold marks and clean type reproduce best.

White needs an underprint to show at all, and photographic images don't come out well on this board. Earthy palettes, black and deep shades hold up nicely, and one-colour flexo is the method most kraft boxes use.

Yes, strength comes from the board grade and the flute, and the liner colour doesn't change it. Unbleached kraft skips the bleaching stage, so its long fibres keep their strength.

E-flute is the usual build, with B-flute kraft for heavier contents, and either can close with a tab lock or an ear lock. A double-wall version is available for the heaviest shipments.

An unlaminated kraft box goes straight into the curbside cardboard stream, which is the main reason many brands pick it. A film lamination complicates that, so we keep the recyclable builds free of laminate and print them with water-based inks.

The recycled content of the fluting can be printed on the box as a stated percentage, which carries more weight with customers than a vague green symbol.

One solid colour inside a brown box makes a strong contrast when the lid opens, and it's the upgrade we'd suggest first. The outside keeps its natural look while the interior carries the brand colour or a short message.

Two popular kraft sizes are 8 × 6 × 2 in and 12 × 9 × 4 in, measured on the inside. Measure the product at its largest points and add a little room for tissue or an insert.

A close fit keeps filler to a minimum, which matters more on kraft, since loose plastic fill works against the recyclable message the box is carrying.
