The pillow box shape, a tube with curved ends, reads as gentle, considered and gift-ready. It originated in jewellery packaging and has stayed there because the curve communicates something the rectangle cannot: that the contents are precious, delicate, worth the ceremony.

The pillow box is a single sheet of board that folds into its shape and tucks closed at each curved end. No adhesive, no tools, no training. It erects in seconds, which matters for jewellery retailers, gift shops, and event planners who need to package dozens of items per hour.

A die-cut box whose curved end flaps fold in to create a soft, rounded silhouette that bulges gently in the middle like a cushion.
It ships completely flat and assumes its shape in a single fold, with the flaps interlocking without glue or tape. It is one of the few packaging formats whose entire appeal is its outline rather than its construction.
Flat and semi-flat contents such as jewellery, scarves, gift cards, cosmetics samples, confectionery and small accessories.
The internal volume is shallow and curved, which defeats anything bulky or rigid with square corners. Overfilling forces the curved ends open and the shape collapses, which is the format's characteristic failure and immediately visible. Check with a filled sample before committing.
Standard ones hold by friction only and can shake open. Self-lock versions add interlocking tabs to the curved ends.
For anything travelling in a mailer among other items, or handled repeatedly on a shelf, the self-lock version is worth the marginal cost. It changes the box from one that can be shaken open to one that stays shut, at almost no material difference.

Too light and the pillow profile sags, which loses the only thing the format was chosen for. Recycled kraft grades are slightly less stiff than virgin, so stepping up a caliper is worth doing there. Larger formats and windowed versions both need more body again.

A pillow box holds its shape through the tension of its curved end scores and the stiffness of its face panels, and cutting a large aperture removes exactly the material maintaining that tension. Keep windows modest with a solid frame all round, and check a filled sample for sag.

It solves the horizontal format's retail problem: a flat pillow box has to lie down or be propped, which wastes shelf space. The trade-off is stability. A tall narrow box with a soft curved top tips more readily, so the base footprint needs to be wide enough and the height kept proportionate.
