Pillow Boxes with Window.

The film has to follow the bow of the panel once the box is formed, so it can wrinkle or lift at the edges. On a flat carton the film just sits on a flat panel. On a pillow it bends with the board every time the box is opened and closed.

We control that with the aperture size, the choice of film and wrinkle-free application on the flat blank before the box is ever formed.

Make it big enough to show the contents and no bigger, with a solid frame of board all round. The face panel holds the curve under tension, and cutting a large hole in it lets the box sag and distort.

If you want a generous window, we step up the caliper within our 18 to 24pt range to restore the stiffness. A filled sample shows straight away whether the face still holds its shape.

PET is our standard clear film, cellulose is the compostable option, and an open die-cut with no film suits some contents better than either. We use PET instead of PVC for its clarity and because it recycles more easily.

Film makes sense where dust matters, such as sweets and cosmetic samples. Soap and other dry goods can sit behind an open aperture, which keeps the pack to one material.

Arcs, ovals, hearts and brand outlines all work, along with plain rectangles with rounded corners. Rounded shapes spread the stress of the curve, while sharp inside corners are where a curved panel tends to tear.

We keep the aperture centred on the face and clear of the end folds, since those folds create the pillow shape and need the full strength of the board.

Treat the window as the centre of the design and print a frame that leads the eye into it. A border, a pattern that stops at the aperture edge or a line of type curving round it all work well.

Foil accents near the window add contrast against the clear film. Keep critical text a little way back from the cut, as the die can drift slightly from the print on any run.

We most often make them at 4 × 3 × 1 inches and 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches, and custom sizes are cut to order. The window is sized as a share of the face, so a bigger box can carry a bigger aperture without weakening.

Allow 7 to 10 business days after your proof is signed off, or 5 to 7 on a rush schedule. The window is cut in the same die pass as the box and patched during finishing.

We recommend a filled sample before bulk so you can check for sag around the aperture. Samples take 5 to 7 business days, and the sample charge is deducted from the production order.
