The pen sits in a fitted channel or on a shaped pillow that grips the barrel, so it can't roll from side to side. Rolling is what bends clips and scratches lacquer between the factory and the desk. The seat holds the barrel and leaves the cap's finial free, since pressure there can mark it.

A clip pressed under a closing lid is the most common way pens get damaged in transit. The lid pushes down, and the clip bends open and stays that way. We set the pen in its seat so the clip faces sideways or sits in a relief cut, with space between it and the lid lining.

Check this on the sample with the lid shut firmly, since a few millimetres makes the difference.

Yes, a set box has separate seats for the pen, a matching pencil, spare refills and a converter. Giving each piece its own position is what keeps a set usable years later, when the owner comes back for a refill. Refills sit in a slim compartment under or beside the main channel.

We lay out the insert from the actual pieces, so tell us the refill type and its length.

A single pen box is typically about 7 × 2 × 1 in, and a set box about 8 × 4 × 1.5 in. We measure the capped pen, then add room for the lining and the channel walls. Oversized pens and fountain pens with large clips need more depth.

Personalised pens are seated engraving-up, which can change the orientation and the insert, so mention engraving when you send sizes.

We build the hinged shell for repeated use, because a pen box often ends up living on a desk and gets opened every day. A paper-only hinge splits along the fold after heavy use. A reinforced hinge under the wrap and a rigid board shell keep the lid aligned and closing cleanly.

A lid that closes flush also keeps dust off the lining, which matters more on a box that stays out.

Soft-touch wrapped board with a foil company mark is the usual corporate choice, and leatherette with a deboss is the step up. Foil holds fine logo detail well on both. Wood-grain and leatherette shells suit an executive gift.

Inside, a satin or velvet lining in a contrast colour frames the pen. For personalised pens we seat the pen engraving-up so the name reads the moment the lid opens.

Yes, the minimum is 500 boxes, which suits a corporate gifting programme or a pen maker's standard range. Each insert layout counts as its own run, so a single-pen box and a set box are two orders of 500. The maximum is 100,000.

A new foil die lets the same box carry a different logo on a later run, which helps if one box serves several corporate clients.

Your run is made in 7 to 10 business days after artwork approval, or in 5 to 7 business days on rush. Before that, a sample comes back in 5 to 7 business days so you can seat the pen, close the lid over the clip and check the lining. The sample fee is deducted when you go ahead with the order.
