We aim for about 1 to 1.5mm of total play between tray and sleeve. That gives a smooth travel that feels precise. Any tighter and the tray binds, which is the worse of the two failures because the customer has to force the box open at the exact moment it's meant to feel special.

A little rattle can be absorbed by the insert. A drawer that sticks can't be fixed after the fact, so we err toward an easy slide.

Folding board flexes, and once it flexes the slide fit drifts. A paperboard sleeve squeezed in a hand or a bag pinches the tray, then goes loose after enough handling. We build both the sleeve and the tray from 2mm greyboard so the tolerance stays where we set it.

Wrapped greyboard also carries a loaded tray without the base bowing, which matters when the contents have some weight to them.

You pull it with a ribbon, a thumb notch or a tray face that overhangs the sleeve, and a stop tab can keep it from coming out completely. Ribbon suits gifting, the notch is the tidiest option for everyday use, and overhang is the least forgiving because the tray length has to be exact.

We'd fit the stop for anything valuable. The drawer still opens far enough to show everything, but the tray can't drop free.

Yes, and most drawer boxes are. The sleeve is the closed object, so it gets the brand mark, usually foil or deboss on a soft-touch wrap. The tray is what slides into view, so a contrasting colour or a printed interior shows up gradually as the drawer travels.

A matte black sleeve over a coloured tray is a common pairing. Wraps are printed CMYK or PMS, with spot UV available on either part.

Most of the drawer boxes we make fall around 7 × 5 × 2 in or 9 × 7 × 2.5 in, though each one is sized to its contents. We take the tray's inside dimensions first because that's where the product sits, then build the sleeve around the tray with the slide clearance added.

Drawer boxes tend to be shallow. The reveal works best when everything lies face-up in one layer and comes into view as the tray moves.

Yes, a drawer box order can be as small as 30 pieces. Sleeve and tray are made as a matched pair, so thirty means thirty complete boxes. Short runs like that suit a limited edition, a PR mailing or trade-show samples ahead of a wider launch.

A fitted platform in EVA foam, board or flocked material sits in the tray and holds each item in place. EVA suits anything that must not move in transit, board platforms can be wrapped to match the box, and flock is the soft finish jewellery brands use.

Since the tray is sized with a little play, the insert is what stops the contents shifting when the box is tipped or shipped.
