Hanging Tab Boxes.

Reinforcing the root of the tab, where it meets the carton body, is what keeps it from tearing. The whole filled weight hangs from that one strip of board. Many designs fold the header over on itself so the slot cuts through two layers, and heavier lines get a laminated reinforcement as well.

A torn tab drops the product on the floor and usually becomes a return, so we reinforce to the filled weight, not the empty carton.

A euro slot is the dogbone-shaped cutout that sits on a standard retail peg hook, and most store fixtures are built around it. Its shape centres the carton on the hook and forgives a little variation in placement. A plain round hole works on some pegs but lets the box turn.

A sombrero-shaped hole is the other common cutout, and it fits a wider range of hook styles.

For light and mid-weight products, a tab die-cut from the same blank is the economical choice. Heavier products get an applied tab glued to the carton, or a delta tab retrofitted onto an existing box. Past a certain weight, a backer card behind the carton spreads the load.

Either way, we test by hanging a filled box on a peg and giving it a shake before the design is signed off.

Put the brand in the header above the hook, knowing the front face is always the one turned to the shopper. On a crowded wall the header of a lower row can be hidden by the boxes hanging above it, so keep the product name on the bottom half of the face as well. Hooks sit above the shelf line, which puts the carton near eye height.

Gloss coating stands up to handling on a busy wall, while matte, foil, spot UV and embossing suit premium lines.

Our peg-wall formats typically run from 3 × 1.5 × 5 in up to 6 × 2 × 8 in. Allow for the header when you plan hook spacing on the fixture. Slim depths suit pegs best, since a deep box hangs forward of the hook and tilts.

Tell us the filled weight along with the size. Weight decides the tab construction more than the dimensions do.

18pt paperboard is our standard for tab-integrated blanks, with laminated reinforcement at the tab for heavier products. SBS gives the cleanest print surface, and kraft board suits a natural look. A matte or gloss laminate also adds some tear resistance around the slot.

Reinforced fold lines keep the header from creasing forward under load, which is what makes a peg box look tired after a few weeks on the wall.

Peg boxes have a minimum order of 500, and a run can go as large as 100,000. Integrated tabs and euro slots are cut in the same die as the carton, so they don't need a separate setup.

Retail buyers often want a test hang on their own fixture, so order a sample first if you're pitching a new account and bring it to the meeting filled.
