Standing each macaron on edge in a channel one shell wide means nothing slides, rotates or touches. Meringue shells crack under very little pressure, and the trade settled on this layout because it holds them without squeezing.

The channel width is matched to your shell diameter. Around three millimetres of slack is already enough to let shells rub against each other in transit.

Rigid gift boxes suit a luxury house or a wedding programme, and an 18 to 24pt sleeve-and-tray carton suits everyday counter sales. Both hold the same channel insert, so the macarons travel the same way.

The sleeve style has a practical benefit. The tray slides out and can be offered straight to guests, which is part of what a gift buyer pays for.

Yes, we build them in chill-stable board and film so condensation doesn't stain the box when it comes out of refrigeration. Ordinary uncoated board can spot and cockle after a night in the fridge.

Clear display lids use the same chill-stable film, so a windowed box can sit in a chilled display case too.

Foil on a pastel board is the macaron-house signature, and soft-touch lamination on a rigid box gives the luxury hand. A ribbon closure finishes the gift.

We'd also print the interior or the tray in a brand colour, since the tray becomes the serving plate when it's lifted out. Matte finishes usually read more premium than gloss in this category.

A 6-count channel box is 7 × 2.2 × 2 in and a 12-count is 13 × 2.2 × 2 in. Gift squares with two or more channels side by side are available for larger assortments.

You can order custom macaron boxes from 500 per configuration. For most patisseries that means a line of 6-count boxes and a line of 12-count, since the dozen is the usual gift unit.

Wedding favour boxes in a couple's colours are ordered the same way, with the names and date printed on the lid or a band.

The run is finished 7 to 10 business days after your proof is approved, and 5 to 7 on rush. Allow 5 to 7 business days for a sample, and what you spend on it is credited to the order that follows.

Foil colour and pastel board shade are hard to judge on screen, so a physical sample is worth it before a large gift-season run.

They travel well when the channel fits the shells snugly and the gift box rides inside a corrugated shipper. The channel tray stops movement, which is where most cracked shells come from.

For wedding or corporate orders we'd pack the gift boxes flat, lid up, with a fitted insert in the shipper so the boxes can't shift. The clear display lid style is better kept for counter sales than for the mail.
