Rigid Boxes With Lids.

Go with lift-off for a gift that gets opened once, and hinged for anything opened again and again. A lift-off lid separates completely and gives the fullest reveal, but the customer has to put it down somewhere. A hinged lid stays attached, which suits storage boxes, kits and keepsakes.

Most products fall clearly on one side of that line, and we'd rarely steer anyone toward something more complicated.

The hinge is a wrapped joint, and we specify it by how often the box will be opened. A gift box opened a handful of times asks far less of its hinge than a kit box opened daily, and fatigue at that fold is how hinged boxes fail. We set the hinge wrap and the board gap to the use you describe.

We also check that the lid closes flush all the way across. A lid sitting proud on one side is the flaw buyers notice first.

About 1.5mm per side between the lid and the base. That gap traps a little air as the lid comes down, so it settles slowly onto the base instead of dropping. Cut it tighter and the lid sticks. Give it more and the lid rattles and sits off-square.

We cut both parts from the same 2mm greyboard and wrap them together so the fit holds across the whole run.

Not reliably on its own, because nothing but friction holds a lift-off lid in place. Packed snugly in a shipping carton it stays put, but a loose box dropped on its side can lose its lid. A ribbon tie or a printed paper band around the box keeps it closed for hand delivery.

Hinged lids stay attached, which is one reason we'd lean that way for kits that go out by post.

Most of the decoration belongs on the lid, since that's the face seen when the box is closed. Hot foil, emboss, spot UV and soft-touch all work there, over a wrap printed CMYK or PMS. A shallow lid leaves a band of the base showing, and that band is where a two-tone build in a contrasting colour pays off.

We'd also line the inside of the lid. Bare grey board under a lifted lid is the economy tell buyers pick up on.

8 × 8 × 3 in and 10 × 8 × 4 in cover a lot of our orders, in both hinged and lift-off versions. We work from the inside dimensions of the base, then size the lid around it with the clearance built in. Depth is measured to the rim of the base.

If an insert is going in, give us its footprint as well, since the cavity has to take the insert and the product together.

Thirty boxes is the floor for this format, hinged or lift-off. That makes a short run for a pop-up, a sample kit or a first batch of gift sets practical. Orders can climb to 100,000 on the same spec.

The per-box price falls as the quantity rises, so we're happy to quote two or three quantities side by side.

Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days after you sign off the proof. If a date is tight, rush brings that down to 5 to 7 business days. Before bulk we can make a sample in 5 to 7 business days so you can test how the lid behaves, and what you paid for that sample is credited to the order.
