Back Seal Bags

The seam runs down the back, leaving the whole front face clean for print.

A pillow bag closing on a single rear fin. It uses less film per unit than any gusseted format, which is why high-volume snack and powder lines favour it.

Material
Metallised BOPP
The snack-food standard. Good moisture and light barrier, prints exceptionally, runs fast on FFS lines.
Category default
BOPP / VMPET / LLDPE
Fuller barrier structure where shelf life needs more than metallised BOPP alone.
Longer shelf life
Clear BOPP
Transparent film for confectionery and produce where the product should show.
Visibility
Kraft / PE
Paper outer for natural positioning, though it runs slower on high-speed lines.
Natural look
Fin Seal Sealant
Inner layer sealing to itself — the more forgiving and more common seam type.

Finish
Gloss Lamination
Bright saturated colour, and the finish the snack category is built on.
Most common
Matte Lamination
Premium and understated, increasingly used in better-for-you snack ranges.
Premium tier
Metallic Reveal
Unprinted areas showing the metallised layer as mirror silver — a category convention in crisps.
Distinctive
Clear Panel
Unprinted window showing the product.
Confectionery
Continuous Front Artwork
No seam crosses the face, so photographic designs run uninterrupted.

What We Make

The full kit of capabilities.

Back Seal Construction
Single sheet formed into a tube and sealed down the reverse.
Fin or Lap Seam
Fin seal as standard; lap seal where a flatter back is needed.
Roll Stock for FFS Lines
Printed film on a reel, matched to your machine and web width.
Uninterrupted Front Print
No seam across the face — artwork runs continuously.
Tear Notch
Opens by hand without scissors.
Euro Slot
Reinforced hang hole for impulse peg display.
Metallised & Clear Films
The full range of snack-food structures.
Pre-Made Bags
Supplied finished where you are hand-filling rather than running an FFS line.
Free-Standing
A pillow pack has no base and will not stand. If it needs to sit on a shelf, specify a stand-up pouch.
Resealable
This is a single-use format. Adding a zipper removes the film efficiency and line speed that are the whole reason to choose it.

Measure Twice

Sizing & dieline.

Every Back Seal Bags is made to your fill, not pulled off a shelf. A pouch is quoted width × length — tell us what goes inside and how much of it, and we return a measured spec, free, before you commit to anything.

How to measure
01
Start with the fill

A pouch is sized by what goes in it, not by outside dimensions. Give us the fill weight and, if you can, the bulk — 500 g of granola needs far more bag than 500 g of powder.

02
Width and length

We quote width × length. Flat pouches need no gusset figure — the bag lies flat when empty.

03
Say what it must do

Zipper or heat seal only, valve or no valve, window or full barrier. These change the film and the bag height, so they belong in the spec rather than added afterwards.

What It Costs

What moves the price
Quantity

The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.

Material and thickness

Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.

Finishing

Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.

Print coverage

Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.

Inserts and hardware

Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.

Timeline

Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

— Frequently Asked Questions —

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about Back Seal Bags.

A bag made from a single continuous sheet of film wrapped into a tube, sealed down the back, then sealed across the top and bottom. A packet of crisps is the example everyone has handled — the seam running down the reverse is what identifies it.

It is also called a pillow pack, from the shape it takes when filled, and either a fin seal or lap seal bag depending on how the back seam is formed.

The defining characteristics are that it uses less film than any other construction and that it is normally formed on the filling line itself rather than supplied as a finished bag.

How the two edges of the film meet at the back.

A fin seal brings the edges together face to face and seals them, leaving a small standing fin on the reverse. Because inside seals to inside, only the inner layer of the laminate needs to be heat-sealable. It is more forgiving and it is what most work uses.

A lap seal overlaps one edge over the other and seals them directly. The back lies flatter and it uses marginally less film — but it requires the outer surface to bond to the inner one, which restricts which structures you can use.

Unless there is a specific reason to want the flatter back, fin seal is the sensible default.

Volume economics, mostly.

It uses the least film. At the quantities snack brands run, a fraction of a cent per bag is a large annual number.

It is made on the filling line. Vertical form-fill-seal machinery forms, fills and seals in one continuous high-speed operation, with no pre-made bags to store or handle.

The front is clean. No seam crosses the face, so photographic artwork runs uninterrupted.

The products suit it. Crisps and snacks are eaten in one sitting, are low density, and are usually flushed with nitrogen — none of which need a gusset, a zipper or a standing base.
