Description
Overview

Retort Pouches

Built to be cooked in — laminates that survive sterilisation a standard film would not.

It gives ambient shelf life without a can, at a fraction of the weight and volume. The seal is the failure point under retort, so integrity is proven at process temperature.

Survives the retort cycle

Where a standard food film delaminates.

Shelf-stable without a can

Ambient life at flexible weight.

Seals tested at temperature

Not at room temperature.

Material
PET / AL / CPP (retort foil)
The standard retort structure. Foil barrier with a cast polypropylene sealant rated for the vessel.
Most specified
Nylon / Foil / CPP
Adds a nylon layer for puncture and flex resistance — used where the pack contains bone, shell or hard pieces.
Puncture resistance
High-Temp CPP Sealant
Cast polypropylene inner layer that holds a seal through steam sterilisation.
The critical layer
Retort-Grade Adhesives
Heat-resistant laminating adhesives. Ordinary adhesives break down and the pouch delaminates.
Just as critical
Transparent Retort Film
Foil-free high-barrier structure where the product needs to be visible. Lower barrier and shorter shelf life than foil.
Visibility option
Retort-Rated Spout
Fitment and cap able to survive the vessel — standard spouts distort.
Liquid products
Finish
Matte Lamination
Retort-grade matte finish, common on premium ready meals and pet food.
Premium tier
Gloss Lamination
High colour saturation for grocery shelves, and it survives the vessel well.
Most common
Retort-Grade Inks
Ink systems that hold colour through steam sterilisation. Standard inks shift and fade.
Required
Metallic Reveal
Unprinted areas showing the foil layer.
Distinctive
Tear Notch
Hand opening on a pack that is often hot when opened.
Recommended
Transparent Panel
Window on foil-free retort structures.

What We Make

The full kit of capabilities.

Retort-Rated Structures
Built to survive steam sterilisation at 121°C and above.
High-Temperature Sealants
Cast polypropylene inner layers that hold a seal in the vessel.
Heat-Resistant Adhesives
Laminating adhesives that do not break down under steam.
Retort-Grade Inks
Colour that survives sterilisation without shifting.
Stand-Up or Flat Formats
Both constructions available in retort structures.
Retort-Rated Spout
Fitments and caps that survive the vessel, for liquid and pourable product.
Puncture-Resistant Nylon
For contents with bone, shell or hard pieces.
Microwave-Safe Options
Structures suitable for reheating in the pack, including self-venting.
Standard Laminates in a Retort
They fail. The sealant softens and the adhesive breaks down — seals open and the film delaminates. There is no partial version of this specification.
Cheapest Flexible Option
Retort structures cost significantly more than standard laminates. Specify them because the process requires it, not for general barrier.

Measure Twice

Sizing & dieline.

Every Retort Pouches is made to your fill, not pulled off a shelf. A pouch is quoted width × length, plus the gusset that lets it stand — tell us what goes inside and how much of it, and we return a measured spec, free, before you commit to anything.

How to measure
01
Start with the fill

A pouch is sized by what goes in it, not by outside dimensions. Give us the fill weight and, if you can, the bulk — 500 g of granola needs far more bag than 500 g of powder.

02
Width and length

We quote width × length, then the bottom gusset depth that sets the footprint. Three figures, and the gusset is the one most often left off.

03
Say what it must do

Zipper or heat seal only, valve or no valve, window or full barrier. These change the film and the bag height, so they belong in the spec rather than added afterwards.

What It Costs

Pricing & minimums.

Retort Pouches is priced per specification rather than from a fixed list — the same box in two different finishes can land at very different numbers. Below is what actually moves the price, so you can shape the spec before you request a quote.

What moves the price
Quantity

The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.

Material and thickness

Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.

Finishing

Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.

Print coverage

Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.

Inserts and hardware

Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.

Timeline

Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

— Frequently Asked Questions —

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about Retort Pouches.

A flexible pouch built to withstand steam sterilisation. The product is filled and the pouch sealed, then the entire sealed pack is cooked in a pressurised steam vessel at around 121°C for 15 to 60 minutes.

That process makes the contents commercially sterile — the same standard a can achieves. Because the pouch stays sealed, nothing can recontaminate the food, so it is shelf stable at room temperature for years with no refrigeration and no preservatives.

The pouch itself has to be specified for the process: a high-temperature sealant layer and heat-resistant laminating adhesives. Standard flexible packaging does not survive a retort vessel.

No. It will fail, and it is worth understanding why so the risk is clear.

The sealant softens. A standard LLDPE inner layer loses strength well below retort temperature, so the seals open under pressure in the vessel.

The adhesive breaks down. Ordinary laminating adhesives are not steam-resistant. The layers separate, the pouch delaminates, and the barrier is destroyed.

The inks shift. Even if the structure held, standard inks fade and change colour through sterilisation.

A retort pouch uses cast polypropylene sealants, retort-grade adhesives and retort-grade inks. It is a genuinely different specification, and there is no way to approximate it with a standard laminate.

Because of the shape, which changes how fast the heat gets in.

A can is a cylinder, so heat has to travel a long way to reach the centre, and the product has to be held at temperature long enough for the coldest point to be sterilised. Everything nearer the outside is overcooked in the meantime.

A retort pouch is thin and flat, so the centre reaches temperature far more quickly. The total cook time is much shorter, which means less thermal damage to texture, colour and flavour across the whole product.

It is the same sterilisation standard and the same food safety outcome — the food just spends far less time being cooked to get there.
