It depends on the sealer: a suction machine needs embossed channel film, and a chamber machine works with smooth film. The textured inner surface keeps air channels open so a countertop suction sealer can draw the air out. A smooth bag on a suction sealer simply will not evacuate.

Chamber sealers pull the vacuum from the whole chamber, so the cheaper smooth film is fine. Tell us which machine you run and we will spec the film to match.

A nylon / PE structure is the standard answer, because nylon gives puncture and flex resistance while the PE layer makes the seal. Under vacuum the film pulls tight around whatever is inside, and stems or dense contents push at the corners. Thin single-layer stock splits there.

For long storage we would move to PET / AL / PE foil, which adds full light exclusion and a stronger odour barrier on top of the strength.

A multi-layer structure holds aroma in; a thick single layer does not, whatever its gauge. Odour barrier comes from the layer stack rather than the film thickness, which is why the foil laminate is the choice for anything stored more than briefly. Metallised laminate is the lower-cost option with good light protection for shorter storage.

Removing the air helps too, since there is less headspace for aroma to collect in before the seal is broken.

Most of this format ships unprinted, for storage, transport and internal use, but full print is available. Matte lamination is the most requested finish where the bag is a retail item, gloss gives saturated colour, and a metallic reveal leaves unprinted areas showing the foil layer.

A compliance panel can be laid out with space for batch, potency, warnings and a QR code, so the panel has room for the required marks in your market.

4 by 6 inches, 6 by 9 inches and 8 by 12 inches are the stock sizes. There is no gusset, so the bag is measured as width by length lying flat. Under vacuum the film collapses around the contents, and the volume shrinks with the air.

Size to the fill with a little margin at the top, because the sealer needs a clear band of film to make the seal.

500 bags is the starting quantity. Unprinted stock and printed runs share that minimum, and pricing steps down in tiers above 1,000. A film change, say from nylon / PE to foil, is quoted as a separate line rather than mixed into one run.

Runs go up to 100,000 units.

Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days from approved artwork, and 5 to 7 business days on a rush order. Samples arrive in 5 to 7 business days. Run one through your own sealer before the full order, because the embossed-versus-smooth question only gets settled on the actual machine.

The sample fee is then credited against the bulk run.

A certified child-resistant closure is available where the market requires it, tested to 16 CFR 1700.20. What the format does not do is reseal after opening. Once the vacuum seal is cut the bag is open, and a tear notch is fitted so that cut is clean.

If reclosure matters for the retail unit, pair the vacuum bag with an outer pouch that has a zipper, or move to a CR zipper bag for the retail pack.
