Child-Resistant Boxes
A carton that will not open the way a child expects it to.
Squeeze-tabs, slide locks and hidden catches turn an ordinary box into a certified closure. The mechanism has to survive repeated adult use, not just one test.

Every detail. Intentional.
Squeeze, slide or catch
Three certified mechanisms.
Repeat use is the hard part
Mechanisms fatigue before board does.
Certified against the federal protocol
80% of children must fail.
Board caliper carries the lock
Thin stock defeats the mechanism.
Instructions printed on-pack
Adults need the hint.
Reclosable, not single-use
The protection has to persist.

Built like architecture.
Every order of Child-Resistant Boxes is an engineered build, measured, dieline-cut and hand-wrapped to spec. Below is the standard build sheet.

Sizing & dieline.
We cut Child-Resistant Boxes to a dieline built around your product instead of pulling a stock size off the shelf. Send us the length, width and height of the item (or the item itself) and we return a measured dieline, free, before you commit to anything.
Length, width and height of the item itself, at its widest points. Measure the product, not the box you happen to use today.
Allow 2–4 mm on each axis for a snug fit, and more if you are adding foam, a pillow insert or tissue.
We quote as Length × Width × Height. Tell us whether you are working in millimetres or inches and we match it.
✦ Not sure of your size? Send us the product and we measure it and build the dieline.
Pricing & minimums.
We price Child-Resistant Boxes per specification rather than from a fixed list, because the same build in two different finishes can land at very different numbers. Below is what actually moves the price, so you can shape the spec before you request a quote.
The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.
Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.
Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.
Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.
Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.
Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

Questions, answered.
Everything you need to know about Child-Resistant Boxes.
We build three kinds of lock, a push-tab, a squeeze-and-slide and a hidden catch. Each one needs two actions or a small sequence to work out, which is what defeats the child panel. Closures that rely on strength don't pass, because the adult panel rejects them too.
The choice depends on the box shape and how often it gets opened. A slide-lock suits a drawer-style carton, and a push-tab suits a tuck lid.
The lock relies on the board holding its shape, so the caliper is written into the certified specification. Thin stock bends where the tab bears, and a child can then force the catch.
You can't quietly swap to a lighter board later to save money. Any change to the box, the closure or the board invalidates the certification and needs retesting, so pick the board with the long run in mind.
It should, provided the lock points are reinforced where the mechanism takes the load. On a reclosable carton the tabs and slots wear out before the board does, so we add material exactly there.
The adult panel has to open the box and close it properly again, and a lock that loosens after a few weeks defeats the purpose. A printed reclose indicator helps users confirm the box is secured.
No, print and finish choices have no effect on the certified mechanism. You can use CMYK and PMS colours, hot foil, spot UV, embossing and matte, soft-touch or gloss lamination freely.
What we do insist on is clear opening graphics and high-contrast marking on the tab, showing where to press and slide. Adults need that hint to get it open first time, and it helps the adult panel result.
Every CR box we make is a custom size, measured internally as length by width by depth. Give us the dimensions of what goes inside plus any insert, and we add clearance for the lock itself.
A slide-lock needs room for the tray to travel, and a push-tab needs a flap long enough to engage. We draw both on the dieline so you can check fit on a sample.
We start child-resistant cartons at 500 pieces. The board, closure and size stay fixed across the run, because that configuration is what was tested.
Artwork can change from one run to the next without touching the mechanism, so a new design doesn't mean a new certification. Carton volumes go as high as 100,000 on one certified build.
Plan on 7 to 10 business days of production after approval, or 5 to 7 if you take a rush slot. A sample carton takes 5 to 7 business days and should be opened and closed many times before you approve it.
Its fee is credited back when the carton order goes ahead. Design and dieline help is free, and we ship CR cartons anywhere in the USA.
Yes, the standard builds use recyclable paperboard, with kraft board as a natural-looking option. The lock is folded from the same board, so there's no plastic or metal hardware to separate.
Lamination and window patching add a thin film, so leave them off if full recyclability matters to your buyers. A tamper-evident seal can still be added over the lock.
