Description
Overview

Flat Bottom Pouches

A folded base that opens flat, so the pack stands square as contents settle.

It presents like a rigid pack while shipping flat, which is the whole commercial argument. The base geometry is what keeps it facing forward rather than slumping when half empty.

Material
BOPP / VMPET / LLDPE
Standard barrier structure with enough body to hold the box shape.
Most specified
PET / AL / PE (foil)
Full barrier for coffee and long shelf life, and the stiffest option.
High barrier
Kraft / PE
Paper outer, which suits the format — kraft holds a crease sharply so the box edges read clean.
Natural look
Heavier Gauge Film
Recommended over the minimum. A flat bottom in thin film loses the shape it was bought for.
Do not economise
Clear Window Panel
PET window, usually on a side gusset where it does not interrupt the front face.
Optional
Finish
Matte Lamination
The dominant finish in premium coffee and speciality food, and it shows the square edges cleanly.
Most requested
Gloss Lamination
Higher colour saturation for mass retail.
Mass retail
Soft-Touch
Velvet hand-feel on a pack customers handle daily.
Premium tier
Kraft Outer
Natural paper face, extremely common in this format for coffee and organic ranges.
Category staple
Spot Gloss
Sheen detail over matte, often used on the logo only.
Subtle
Side Panel Print
Full artwork on the gussets rather than a plain colour — the most under-used option here.

What We Make

The full kit of capabilities.

Five-Panel Printing
Front, back, both side gussets and the base.
True Flat Base
A rectangular panel, not a folded gusset — square sides top to bottom.
Shelf Blocking
Packs sit flush against each other with no gaps.
Degassing Valve
One-way vent for fresh-roasted coffee.
Resealable Zipper
Standard or wide-profile depending on the fill.
Tin Tie
Fold-and-clip closure where the coffee aesthetic calls for it.
Side Gusset Window
Product visibility without interrupting the front face.
Case & Pallet Efficiency
Square profile packs and stacks better than any other pouch format.
Cheapest Per Unit
It is the most expensive common construction. If cost per bag is the deciding factor, a stand-up or side gusset does the same job for less.
Thin-Gauge Film
The box shape only holds with enough body in the laminate. Specifying the thinnest film cancels out the reason for choosing this format.

Measure Twice

Sizing & dieline.

Every Flat Bottom Pouches is made to your fill, not pulled off a shelf. A pouch is quoted width × length, plus the gusset that lets it stand — tell us what goes inside and how much of it, and we return a measured spec, free, before you commit to anything.

How to measure
01
Start with the fill

A pouch is sized by what goes in it, not by outside dimensions. Give us the fill weight and, if you can, the bulk — 500 g of granola needs far more bag than 500 g of powder.

02
Width and length

We quote width × length, then the bottom gusset depth that sets the footprint. Three figures, and the gusset is the one most often left off.

03
Say what it must do

Zipper or heat seal only, valve or no valve, window or full barrier. These change the film and the bag height, so they belong in the spec rather than added afterwards.

What It Costs

Flat Bottom Pouches is priced per specification rather than from a fixed list — the same box in two different finishes can land at very different numbers. Below is what actually moves the price, so you can shape the spec before you request a quote.

What moves the price
Quantity

The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.

Material and thickness

Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.

Finishing

Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.

Print coverage

Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.

Inserts and hardware

Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.

Timeline

Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about Flat Bottom Pouches.

The base. A stand-up pouch has a folded gusset at the bottom that opens into a rough oval when filled. A flat bottom pouch has a genuine rectangular panel as its base.

That single difference cascades. The flat bottom stands square rather than rounded, keeps its shape as the contents go down, blocks flush against neighbouring packs on a shelf, and stacks properly in a case. It also gives you two full side panels that take print, where a stand-up pouch just has creased folds.

The flat bottom costs more — more film, more seals, and it needs a stiffer laminate. Choose it when the pack is seen on a shelf or kept on a counter. A stand-up pouch is the better value where it isn't.

Because it behaves like a box. The rectangular base and the squared side gussets give it a carton-like profile that holds under its own weight, so it sits, stacks and blocks the way a folding carton does rather than the way a bag does.

The two names are used interchangeably in the trade. "Box pouch" tends to be used more in North America, "flat bottom" more broadly. Some suppliers also call it a "block bottom" pouch. They are all the same construction.

Yes, and this is one of the most common combinations we quote. Flat bottom plus degassing valve plus matte kraft is close to the default specification for speciality coffee.

The valve is heat-welded into the film during manufacture, usually on the front or a side gusset. It lets carbon dioxide out — which fresh-roasted coffee releases for several days — while keeping oxygen from getting in. Without it a sealed bag of fresh coffee inflates and can split a seal.
