In December your gift competes with everything. Every supplier, partner and agency sends something in the same two weeks. Desks fill up, hampers accumulate in a corner, and a genuinely thoughtful gift becomes one of fifteen. Meanwhile couriers are at annual peak — slower, less reliable, more damage.

In January, almost nothing arrives. A gift landing in the first or second week has the recipient's full attention because nobody else is sending anything. Transit is fast and reliable, and production capacity is available at normal rather than seasonal rates — so the same budget buys a better gift.

The framing is also more useful. A New Year gift is about the year ahead, which for a business relationship says something more forward-looking than a retrospective thank you. Diaries, planners and desk items fit naturally — and unlike a hamper consumed in a week, they sit on a desk for twelve months.

Two practical points: avoid festive imagery, or it reads as a late Christmas gift and you lose the advantage entirely. And target the first working week rather than despatching in late December, when offices are closed and parcels sit in post rooms.
