Description
Overview

Tin Tie Bags

A bendable strip that recloses by hand — coffee's inherited closure, without a zipper's cost.

Fold the top, press the tie, and the pack is closed again. It takes a degassing valve, stands when filled, and suits the roastery register better than a polished zipper.

Material
Kraft / PE
Paper outer with a polyethylene inner. Moisture barrier, heat sealable, and the general-purpose standard.
Most specified
Kraft / Foil / PE
Full barrier behind a paper face — the speciality coffee structure when shelf life matters as much as the look.
Coffee standard
Greaseproof Liner
Stops butter and oil wicking into the paper and staining it. Essential for bakery.
Bakery essential
Metallised Laminate
Improved barrier where a full foil is not needed but kraft/PE is not enough.
Middle ground
Degassing Valve
One-way vent for coffee packed within days of roasting.
Coffee
Clear PET Window
Panel showing the bean, grind or baked product.

Finish
Natural Kraft
Uncoated brown paper. The defining look of the format and by far the most requested.
Category default
White Kraft
Bleached paper face for a cleaner, more contemporary version of the same idea.
Modern take
One-Colour Print
Single spot colour on kraft. Cheaper than full colour and it reads as more authentic, not less.
Recommended
Full CMYK
Photographic print where the brand needs it, though it works against the artisan cue.

Die-cut panel with film, showing the product.
Bakery & coffee
Hot Foil Stamping
Metallic detail on kraft — a very effective contrast on premium ranges.

What We Make

The full kit of capabilities.

Tin Tie Closure
Fold-over metal strip that recloses by hand.
Heat Seal Beneath
A sealed strip under the tin tie for genuine shelf life, torn off on first opening.
Degassing Valve
One-way vent for fresh-roasted coffee.
Greaseproof Liner
Stops butter and oil staining the paper on bakery products.
Foil Liner
Full barrier behind a kraft face.
Clear Window
Die-cut panel showing bean, grind or baked product.
One-Colour Kraft Print
The most cost-effective and most authentic-reading finish for this format.
Side Gusset Construction
Volume per footprint, the traditional pairing with a tin tie.
Airtight Reseal
A folded tin tie resists spillage and slows staling. It does not exclude oxygen. For a hermetic reseal you need a zipper, and for real shelf life a heat seal underneath.
Barrier From Kraft Alone
Unlined kraft has almost no barrier. The liner is doing all the protective work, so specify it from the product rather than the look.

Measure Twice

Sizing & dieline.

Every Tin Tie Bags is made to your fill, not pulled off a shelf. A pouch is quoted width × length, plus the gusset that lets it stand — tell us what goes inside and how much of it, and we return a measured spec, free, before you commit to anything.

How to measure
01
Start with the fill

A pouch is sized by what goes in it, not by outside dimensions. Give us the fill weight and, if you can, the bulk — 500 g of granola needs far more bag than 500 g of powder.

02
Width and length

We quote width × length, then the bottom gusset depth that sets the footprint. Three figures, and the gusset is the one most often left off.

03
Say what it must do

Zipper or heat seal only, valve or no valve, window or full barrier. These change the film and the bag height, so they belong in the spec rather than added afterwards.

What It Costs

What moves the price
Quantity

The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.

Material and thickness

Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.

Finishing

Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.

Print coverage

Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.

Inserts and hardware

Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.

Timeline

Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

— Frequently Asked Questions —

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about Tin Tie Bags.

A bag with a flat metal strip running along the top edge. You fold the top of the bag over two or three times and press the strip flat, and it holds the fold closed.

It is one of the oldest closures in food packaging and it long predates the plastic zipper. It has survived because it reseals adequately with no moving parts, and because it looks handmade — which in speciality coffee and artisan bakery is the whole point.

Almost all tin tie bags have a kraft paper outer, because the paper and the metal strip together are what create the artisan cue.

No, and it is important not to specify one expecting that it is.

Folding the tin tie closes the bag against spillage and slows staling by restricting airflow. It does not create a hermetic seal and it does not exclude oxygen. For coffee that will be drunk within a fortnight, or bread eaten within days, that is perfectly adequate.

Where real shelf life is needed, the bag is heat sealed underneath the tin tie at filling. That seal is hermetic. The customer tears it off on first opening and uses the tin tie for every reclose after that — you get the barrier during distribution and the artisan closure in the customer's kitchen.

This is how most speciality coffee tin tie bags are actually built.

Yes, and for fresh-roasted coffee you should.

Coffee releases carbon dioxide for several days after roasting. In a bag with a heat seal under the tin tie, that gas has nowhere to go and the pack inflates — potentially splitting a seal. A one-way degassing valve lets the CO₂ out while keeping oxygen from getting in.

The valve is heat-welded into the film during manufacture, usually on the front panel. The standard speciality coffee specification is kraft outer, foil or PE liner, degassing valve, heat seal at fill, tin tie for reclose.
