The difference is who chooses it, and that changes the whole specification.

A journal is bought by someone who deliberately wanted a journal. They frequently care about paper, and they will notice if a fountain pen bleeds through 80gsm. That audience justifies 100–120gsm paper and lay-flat binding.

A corporate notebook is given away — at a conference, in an onboarding pack, at a client meeting. The recipient did not choose it. The test is simply: is it good enough that they keep it rather than bin it?

For that test, 80gsm is fine. Most people writing in a conference notebook use a ballpoint, and 80gsm handles ballpoint perfectly. Spending on heavier paper is spending on something the recipient will not register.

Where we would spend instead:

• Wire-o binding — it lies flat, people genuinely prefer it, and it is only a small step up in cost.
• Internal page printing — a footer on every page, a useful back page. The notebook sits on a desk for months and almost every corporate notebook wastes that entirely.
