Earbuds are small and cost a meaningful amount. A customer opening the box is, consciously or not, deciding whether the thing in their hand justifies what they paid — and that judgement is formed in the first few seconds of opening.

A well-designed insert creates a sequence: the charging case presented alone at the top, then a second layer underneath holding tips, cable and documentation. That staging makes a small object feel considered. Everything tipped into one cavity together feels cheap regardless of how good the printing is.

There is a practical dimension too. Earbuds ship with several small components, and loose silicone tips are the most commonly reported missing item in the category. Seating each one stops them migrating during transit.

Precision matters more here than on a larger box: on a package a few inches across, a millimetre of slack is both visible and audible when the box is shaken.
