Gift Kit for Centenary Jubilee.

Because of what a centenary kit actually is: not a gift, but a permanent commemorative.

Very few organisations reach a hundred years, and virtually nobody involved will see the next one. What you produce will be kept — by recipients, by families who inherit it, by the organisation itself, and frequently by a local records office or library. It is reasonable to assume someone will open one in fifty years' time.

That changes the material specification in ways that would be overspecification at any other milestone:

• Acid-free stock. Ordinary paper yellows and becomes brittle over decades. A commemorative that has gone brown undoes its own purpose.
• Section-sewn binding. Glued spines eventually fail; sewn ones do not.
• Cloth over board. It ages well and handles being taken off a shelf repeatedly over years.

The related recommendation is to start early. Archive research, image restoration and writing are the slow parts of a centenary, not the printing. A rushed centenary volume looks rushed, and this is the one project where that is genuinely a shame.
