With variant kits built on an identical outer box — and the identical part is what makes it work.

In any organisation of reasonable size, a single kit specification will exclude someone. Alcohol excludes people who do not drink for health, religious or personal reasons. Pork gelatin, non-halal ingredients and common allergens exclude others. Being handed something you cannot use, at the exact moment intended to make you feel valued, is a poor experience — and people remember it.

The approach that works:

• Keep the box, insert and presentation identical across every variant.
• Vary only the contents.
• Make it impossible to tell from the outside which variant someone received.

That last point matters most. A visibly different "alternative" box singles people out, which is worse than the original problem. If nobody can tell — including the recipient's colleagues — then everyone simply receives a good gift.

Collecting preferences quietly in advance, rather than asking people to declare a requirement publicly, is the other half of getting this right.
