It depends entirely on reinforcement, and the figure to design against is the loaded weight rather than the box size.

The challenge is not the static load — it is that the load is dynamic. Customers browsing a peg lift packs off and push them back repeatedly, so the tab takes a series of small shocks rather than a steady weight. That is considerably harder on board.

Three levels of reinforcement:

• Plain die-cut tab — light products only.
• Reinforced patch or doubled board — the usual specification for anything with a fitted insert.
• Applied plastic hanger — for genuinely heavy packs where board will not do.

One thing brands consistently underestimate: the insert itself adds weight. A pack with a fitted insert is heavier than an equivalent empty box, so weigh a made-up unit rather than estimating.

Also check where the tab sits relative to the loaded centre of gravity — with product held at one end, packs hang crooked if the tab is simply centred on the box.
