The problem is that flat board inserts hold things at edges and faces, and a curved vase or an asymmetric sculpture has neither in useful places. Held at too few points, the item can move — and worse, all the force concentrates on those few contact points, which is exactly where ceramics and glass crack.

Two approaches work:

Moulded inserts. Pulp or foam formed to the actual shape of the item, spreading support across a broad area. This is the standard answer for anything curved, and it is model-specific.

Suspension constructions. The item is held in a film or a formed cradle away from every wall of the box, so impacts to the outer never reach it directly. Useful for very fragile or very awkward pieces.

The other thing to specify against is the journey. Home décor sells heavily direct to consumers, and a posted parcel is dropped, thrown and stacked under heavier boxes. That is substantially harder than palletised retail distribution, and protection adequate for a shop will produce breakages by post.
