Overview

Journals Printing

A book someone writes in daily for a year — binding and paper are the whole product.

Journals are used harder than notebooks and kept longer. Sewn binding, heavier paper and a cover that survives a bag are what distinguish them.

What We Make

The full kit of capabilities.

Bleed-Resistant Paper
100 and 120gsm stocks specified against how people actually write.
Lay-Flat Binding
Section-sewn or wire-o so the journal stays open.
Ribbon Markers
Sewn in, matched or contrast colour.
Elastic Closures
Stops splaying in a bag.
Back Pockets
For receipts, cards and loose notes.
Ruled, Dotted, Grid and Plain
Different rulings for genuinely different users.
Soft-Touch, Foil and Deboss
Cover finishing for corporate and retail journals.
Hard and Soft Covers
Both constructions available.
80gsm Paper
Fountain pen and marker bleed through visibly. Fine for a notepad, wrong for a journal anyone writes in properly.
Perfect Binding
It does not lie flat, so writing near the spine means holding the book down. Section-sewn or wire-o instead.

Measure Twice

Sizing & dieline.

Every Custom Printed Journals is cut to a dieline built around your product — not pulled off a shelf. Send us the length, width and height of the item (or the item itself) and we return a measured dieline, free, before you commit to anything.

How to measure
01
Measure the product

Length, width and height of the item itself, at its widest points — not the box you happen to use today.

02
Add clearance

Allow 2–4 mm on each axis for a snug fit, and more if you are adding foam, a pillow insert or tissue.

03
Give us the order

We quote as Length × Width × Height. Tell us whether you are working in millimetres or inches and we match it.

✦ Not sure of your size? Send us the product — we measure it and build the dieline.

What It Costs

What moves the price
Quantity

The single biggest lever. Unit cost falls sharply as volume rises, because setup and tooling spread across more pieces.

Material and thickness

Board weight and stock choice change both the raw material cost and the shipping weight of the finished run.

Finishing

Foil, spot UV, embossing and soft-touch each add a pass on press. One or two lift the box; five compound the cost.

Print coverage

Full-bleed print inside and out costs more than a one-sided design on natural stock.

Inserts and hardware

Foam, moulded pulp, velvet pillows, magnets and ribbon are priced per piece on top of the box itself.

Timeline

Standard production is the base rate. Rush moves you up the production queue and carries a surcharge.

— Frequently Asked Questions —

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about Custom Printed Journals.

It depends on what people write with, and it is worth deciding from your actual audience rather than defaulting.

80gsm is standard copier weight. Ballpoint is fine on it. Fountain pen, gel pen and marker bleed through — visible on the reverse and often blotting. For a journal this generates complaints.

100gsm stops bleed-through for most pens, including typical gel and rollerball. This is the practical minimum for anything sold as a journal.

120gsm handles wet fountain pens and brush pens without ghosting. If your buyers are stationery enthusiasts — and journal buyers frequently are — this is the weight they will notice and appreciate.

There is a trade-off: heavier paper means a thicker book at the same page count, or fewer pages at the same thickness. On a 200-page journal that difference is visible.

Our recommendation: 100gsm minimum, 120gsm if the journal is premium or aimed at people who care about pens. The paper is the part they interact with every single time.
