New rubber, PVC and TPE mats release volatile compounds for days or weeks after manufacture — off-gassing. It is normal, it fades, and it is not a sign of a poor mat.
Packaging affects how the customer experiences it. In an airtight pack, those compounds have nowhere to go and concentrate inside. The customer opens the box to a strong chemical smell and reasonably concludes the mat is cheap or badly made.
Two things fix it:
- Ventilation in the packaging. Perforation lets the compounds dissipate during storage and transit rather than accumulating.
- A short note on the pack explaining the smell is normal, comes from the manufacturing process, and fades within a few days — with a suggestion to unroll the mat in a ventilated room.
The second costs nothing and prevents most complaints. Customers who are told what to expect simply air the mat; customers who are not assume they bought badly.
