It lets the carbon dioxide from freshly roasted beans escape without letting oxygen back in. Beans keep exhaling for days after roasting, and a bag with no valve either swells or has to be filled late. With the valve you can bag within days of roast and keep the barrier intact. Mono-material bags get a matching-polymer valve so the recycling route holds.

PET/AL/PE foil laminate is the coffee standard, and kraft/foil/PE gives the speciality paper look over the same barrier. Foil blocks oxygen, moisture, light and aroma loss together. Metallised laminate costs less but suits coffee sold and drunk quickly, not long shelf life. We would not skip the barrier to save cost, because aroma is the loss nobody sees.

Zipper for retail reseal, tin tie for the roastery register. A zipper gives the customer a reliable reseal for a bag opened every morning. A tin tie folds down and reads artisan, and it suits bags that get used up quickly. Either works with the valve and the foil layer underneath, so the choice is about positioning rather than barrier.

Matte lamination is the speciality standard and hides handling marks, with gloss for grocery tiers and hot foil for single-origin releases. A kraft outer is the most recognisable look in independent coffee. Leave a roast detail panel for origin, altitude, process and roast date. On flat bottom bags the two side gussets are usable print area that most roasters leave blank.

By width and length plus gusset, never as length by width by height. The working sizes are about 4 by 8 inches for 250 g, 5.5 by 10 inches for 500 g and 8 by 13 inches for 1 kg. Whole bean needs more volume than ground at the same weight, so say which you fill. The US retail standard is 12 oz, or 340 g.

Printed coffee bags start at 500 per size and structure. Above 1,000 the pricing steps down. A roaster with three fill weights would typically take 500 of each, and side gusset, flat bottom and stand-up formats are each quoted as their own line.

Production takes 7 to 10 business days, and the rush service takes 5 to 7 business days. A sample bag is ready in 5 to 7 business days, and we suggest filling it, sealing it and checking the valve over a week. The sample charge is credited against your bag order.

Foil laminates are not, and the mono-material PE structure is the recyclable option. A single-polymer bag with a matching-polymer valve can be collected in flexible plastics schemes where they exist. It gives less barrier than foil, so shelf life shortens. Roasters who need an end-of-life route usually pair the mono-material bag with faster turnover of stock.
