Compostable Food Trays.

Yes — and it is one of the genuine advantages of the material over other compostable formats.

Bagasse has no plastic lining and no metal content, so it reheats without the problems that affect coated or laminated alternatives. It is also freezer safe, which means the same tray can go from frozen storage to a microwave.

For sustained hot contact it is generally rated around 100–120°C, which covers normal foodservice temperatures comfortably.

Two practical notes. Very wet dishes reheated for a long time will eventually soften the tray, because bagasse is porous by nature. And highly acidic foods — tomato-based sauces in particular — work on the fibre faster than neutral ones. For those, either specify a lined alternative or accept a shorter standing time.

Only in a limited way, and it is better to plan around it than to fight it.

Moulded fibre has a textured, absorbent surface. Ink soaks in and spreads slightly, so fine detail, small type and photographic artwork do not reproduce well. Simple marks in one colour can work, but the result is soft-edged rather than crisp.

The three options that do work well:

• A printed sleeve — a board band around the tray, which gives you a full-quality print surface and carries mandatory labelling.
• An applied label on the lid or rim. Simplest, and easy to change between products.
• An embossed logo pressed into the fibre during moulding — subtle, permanent, and it reads as considered.

Most operators using fibre trays brand on a sleeve, which also solves ingredient and allergen labelling at the same time.
