The band slips into a slit in a velvet cushion, and the cushion grips it at mid-height so the ring stands upright and faces forward. Slot tension is tuned to the band. Too loose and the ring leans, too tight and it's hard to lift out without scratching.

Wide bands and cocktail rings need a wider slit than a slim engagement band. Send us a sample ring and we'll cut the cushion against it.

A proposal-style box opens slightly past vertical and stays there, so the ring faces the person across the table. The sprung hinge holds that angle and closes with a firm snap.

The lid also has to open with one hand, which limits how stiff the spring can be. Hinge resistance is the first thing we check on a sample, because a lid that flops open or fights back spoils the moment.

Yes, wedding formats use a wider box with two slots side by side, so the pair is presented as a set. The two cushions can be cut to different widths if the band is broader than the engagement ring.

The same sprung-hinge shell is used, only wider, so it opens with the same snap as a single box. Double-ring boxes tend to sit toward the 3 in end of our size range.

Ring box shells are made from rigid board, plastic or wood, then wrapped in leatherette, velvet or a paper finish. Leatherette is the traditional fine-jewelry surface and wears well in a pocket. Velvet feels softer but marks more easily.

Ours are 2mm rigid board, and most brands choose a soft-touch, suede or art paper wrap because it takes a foil logo cleanly. The interior is velvet or satin either way.

Yes, initials can be foil-stamped on the lid and a short message printed inside it above the cushion. Couples keep proposal boxes, so a monogram gives the box a reason to stay out on the dresser.

For retail runs, the brand mark is usually hot foil or an emboss on the lid, with a velvet colour inside that suits your metal. A soft-touch wrap in a bold colour is a modern alternative to classic navy or black.

The common size is about 2 × 2 × 1.8 in, with proposal and double-ring formats running up to 3 in. That footprint fits a jacket pocket and still gives the cushion enough height for the ring to stand proud.

Ring boxes are made in runs of 500 or more. For an independent jeweller that usually means several months of stock, depending on how many rings you sell.

If you also sell earrings and pendants, a matching shell in those formats keeps the counter consistent. Runs go as high as 100,000.

Standard turnaround on ring boxes is 7 to 10 business days after you sign off the proof, and a rush can be done in 5 to 7. The weeks before the holidays and Valentine's Day fill up quickly, so order early for those.

Testing one first is a good idea. A sample is ready in 5 to 7 business days, and the fee is credited when you place the production order.
