Ground spice loses its aromatic oils within months, where whole spice holds them for a year or more. Grinding opens the cells that hold the oils, so oxidation, evaporation and light all work faster. A full aluminium foil laminate is the right structure for ground spice, and a metallised laminate is adequate for fast-moving whole spice.

One barrier for both is a compromise we would rather not quote.

Yes, light fades spice colour and is the most underestimated of the three causes of loss. Foil laminate excludes light completely, and metallised film blocks most of it. A clear pack for long shelf life is something we advise against.

If a window is wanted, keep it small. A limited aperture shows grind and colour without exposing the whole pack.

A wide-profile zipper resists clogging from fine powder and still closes after months of use. Standard narrow zipper tracks fill with ground spice on the first pour and never seal properly again. The wide profile has a coarser interlock that clears when the pouch is pressed shut.

Extra headspace above the zipper gives the seal bar clean film to work on.

Matte lamination is the premium standard for speciality and single-origin spice. Kraft over a full foil barrier gives the artisan face without giving up protection, full CMYK competes on a retail shelf, and a metallic reveal exposes bare foil in unprinted areas.

An origin and harvest panel is worth planning in, since speciality spice buyers read it.

Typical sachets are 3 by 4 inches and jar cartons 2 by 2 by 4 inches. Stand-up pouches, flat pouches and sachets are sized to the fill weight and the density of the grind, since a coarse whole spice takes more volume per gram than a fine powder. Give us the fill and the format and the dimensions follow.

Retail and bulk formats use the same laminate at different widths.

Spice pouches and sachets are made from 500 units. The tiered pricing starts past 1,000, and speciality brands with several SKUs often reach it by combining formats on one order. One production run tops out at 100,000.

Each pouch size has its own minimum because the film width changes.

Printed pouches take 7 to 10 business days, and a rush order 5 to 7. Laminate samples come in 5 to 7 business days and let you check the zipper against your grind before the run. The sample fee is credited to the production order.

A kraft-faced foil structure is a stock laminate and runs to the standard schedule.

Seal width and pressure are set above the granular standard, with extra headspace for the seal bar. Fine powder finds any weak seam, and a dusting of spice in the seal area is the usual cause of a leak. Leaving clean film above the zipper keeps the powder out of the seal.

The pouch is tested with the customer's own grind on the sample.
