A tray is carried by its edges, and bending grows faster than area as the platter gets wider. A stock that is stiff enough at 7 by 5 inches will sag under a party platter twice the width. So the governing spec is rigidity under load, and we move to heavy-caliper board or a formed fibre base as the size climbs.

We do not run light board at platter size. It flexes when lifted and spills the arrangement.

A rolled or folded rim stiffens the tray at the point where hands lift it. Shape does more than thickness here: a modest board with a rolled edge holds flatter than a heavier flat sheet. Moulded fibre trays get the same effect from their formed geometry.

The rim also gives a lid film something to stretch across and a rigid lid something to locate on.

Film for chilled display, a rigid lid for anything that travels or stacks. Stretch film across the rim shows the food and keeps it fresh in a case, but film carries no load. Stacked trays sealed with film crush whatever sits beneath the top one.

A rigid clear lid is matched to the tray footprint, so specify both together. Trays that are served open, at an event, need neither.

Matte black is the standard, because it gives contrast without the reflections gloss throws under overhead lighting. Gloss black has more impact on a dim shelf but competes with the food under bright case lights. Kraft natural suits street-food and lunch formats.

Print is usually kept to a band around the rim, leaving the centre clear. A foil logo on the rim is the premium detail for catering platters.

Trays are measured outside length by width by depth, and the common sizes are 7 by 5 by 1 inch and 9 by 5 by 1.25 inches. Depth stays shallow because sushi is served in a single layer. Sharing and event platters run larger and are quoted individually because board grade changes with span.

We produce from 500 trays per size and finish. Orders past the 1,000 mark move onto the tiered pricing, and the ceiling is 100,000 per run. Compartmented layouts and plain trays count separately toward the minimum.

The dark laminate on a board tray gives the best contrast, so the choice is between presentation and the claim.
